Schoenberg Estate

The Roots

Begining

Schoenberg, a German word, stands for a “Beautiful Lovely Hill”, and it was given to this land by the first settler –the Messner family who migrated from Prussia in 1848. In a letter to their relatives in Prussia, Carl Messner mentioned there were 400 grape vines already planted upon their settlement, indicating the planted roots were amongst some of the earliest vines in Australia.

Generations had lived through the times of hardship in the early settlement era, prosperity in Australian wine development in early 20th century and strive for hope during the war. However, the Messner family had always remained in faith to guard Schoenberg not only as a hard working vigneron, but also as staunch custodian.

Legacy

After over 100 years of guardianship, the Messner offspring handed the keys of this alluring estate to The Liebich family in February of 1971. Having been involved in grape growing and wine making in the Barossa Valley since 1919, the Liebich family continued to produce under the name of Rovalley Wine.

In 1985, the property was transferred to Julie and Garnet Liebich. At this time, the property consisted of Cruchen, Doradillos, Grenache and Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was pulled out and replaced with Shiraz, the rest was pulled out over the years and replaced with Cabernet Sauvignon

A producer’s licence was granted in 2002 to ‘Schoenberg Vineyards’. The wines produced by ‘Schoenberg Vineyards’ included Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and a Sparkling Cabernet were widely liked by Australian market. The Sparkling Cabernet achieved a bronze medal at the ‘Australian Small Winemakers Show’ in 2004.
